Our topic for May: "Cultural Wars On Women" — Thursday, May 24, at 8 pm

Dr. Jennifer McKinney will be our speaker at Venus Hill this month as we explore the topic of cultural wars on women.

Dr. McKinney will talk about historical backlashes surrounding gender issues, the similarities between history's backlashes and what is currently happening in North America, and ways in which religion has played a part. Our hope is to dream together about ways we can break the cycle of oppression with creativity and hope.

Join us at In The Red on Phinney & 65th [Seattle 98103] on Thursday, May 24 at 8pm. Due to the atmosphere we need to protect around this conversation we ask that only women attend, please.

[Real] Intimacy: Sexuality and Spirituality from the perspective of the Subversive—with Tina Sellers. February 23 at 8pm

Recently neo-conservative voices have powerfully come out speaking about the "truth" about marriage and sexuality from a perspective that sometimes rings as unhealthy and dishonoring of women. With recent public controversy surrounding gender roles in marriage, we wanted to get the perspective from someone who has done serious research on the subject of sexual ethics and spiritual health.

Our speaker this month is behavioral scientist, certified sex therapist and licensed family therapist Dr. Tina Sellers who has done extensive study on the impact of the Christian purity movement on the sexual and spiritual health of evangelical Christians. She has also uncovered discarded Judeo-Christian teaching revealing a sacred sexual ethic that illuminates the purpose and hope in God’s gift of sexual desire and sexual communion.

Join us at In The Red on Phinney & 65th [Seattle 98103] at 8pm.

To Save Souls and Feed the Hungry: The Not-So-Well-Known History of Women Evangelists in the US, With Priscilla Pope-Levison | Wednesday January 26th, 8pm

At the turn of the 20th century, women had a crucial role in bringing about the gospel in the US. Women like Sojourner Truth, Phoebe Palmer and others, greatly contributed to the rise of the Church in North America.

In addition to proclaiming the 'good news,' these women built  institutions, like rescue homes & missions, churches & denominations, religious training schools, etc.
Unfortunately, the captivating stories of these fascinating women has been absent from the history of American Evangelicalism.

Dr. Priscilla Pope-Levison has rescued their stories from dusty shelves and brought them to us in her book "Turn the Pulpit Loose: Two Centuries of American Women Evangelists." You can find more information on her book here. She will be sharing with us and leading a conversation around the inspiring lives and works of these women.
As usual, we will meet at In The Red in Phinney Ridge. Wednesday, January 25th at 8pm. See you then!
